Ryanair files lawsuit against passenger

Irish low-cost airline Ryanair has published an unusual piece of news on its official website. It is alleged that Ryanair has initiated legal proceedings before an Irish district court against a passenger claiming more than 15,000 euros in damages. The passenger in question, through his inappropriate behavior, caused Ryanair flight number 7124 from Dublin to Lanzarote, Spain, to be diverted to Porto, Portugal, on April 9, 2024. In addition to all 160 passengers, according to Ryanair, losing an entire day of vacation, the airline’s travel expenses, as well as the costs of landing and overnight stays for passengers, cost the carrier around the aforementioned and claimed 15,000 euros.

A Ryanair spokesperson said: “It is unacceptable that passengers, many of whom are traveling with family or friends to enjoy a relaxing summer holiday, suffer unnecessary inconvenience and shortened vacation time as a result of the unruly behavior of one passenger. (…) This shows just one of the many consequences that passengers who disrupt flights will face, as part of Ryanair’s strict zero tolerance policy, and we hope this measure will deter further disruptive behaviour so that passengers and crew can travel in a comfortable and respectful environment.”
