WestJet to double Dreamliner fleet and strengthens international network

WestJet, Canada’s second-largest airline, has announced the biggest order in its history – 67 new Boeing aircraft. The order, officially confirmed on September 3, includes 60 single-aisle Boeing 737-10s and seven widebody Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, with options for an additional 25 737-10s and four Dreamliners. This brings WestJet’s total order book to 123 aircraft, the largest for any Canadian airline.

WestJet CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech emphasized that this investment will double the airline’s Dreamliner fleet and provide the foundation for expanding its international network. “By adding these aircraft, we are becoming the airline with the largest order book in the country, while significantly reducing fuel consumption and offering more affordable travel to Canadians. These efficient and comfortable aircraft are key to the growth and renewal of our fleet,” said von Hoensbroech.

WestJet began operations in 1996 with three Boeing 737s, and today its fleet includes nearly 150 of them. On long-haul routes, the airline already operates the Boeing 787 and 737 MAX, and with this latest order it will increase its Dreamliner fleet to a total of 14, connecting Canada with Europe, Asia, and Latin America.

Stephanie Pope, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, highlighted that this order reaffirms the long-standing partnership: “We are honored that WestJet has once again placed its trust in us with such a significant investment. We look forward to supporting their growth as they expand their network with the advantages of the 737 MAX and the Dreamliner.”

WestJet’s fleet has an average age of 10 years, making it one of the youngest in North America. The new 737-10 will give the airline the largest capacity of any single-aisle model with the lowest seat cost, while the Dreamliner, in addition to greater efficiency, will offer passengers enhanced comfort.

With this move, WestJet clearly reaffirms its strategy of accelerated growth, with a strong focus on international expansion and providing Canadians with more affordable travel options.
