The largest fleet modernization in Eurowings’ history

With an investment worth several billion euros, the Lufthansa Group will modernize the Eurowings fleet. The Lufthansa Group has ordered 40 brand-new Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. As Eurowings announced on its website, this is one of the largest fleet modernizations in European aviation.

The investment is significant and a major step towards more sustainable flying, as the latest generation of modern aircraft ordered consumes up to 30 percent less kerosene, reduces noise emissions thanks to engine efficiency and reduces the carbon footprint.

The delivery of the first Boeing 737 MAX 8 ordered by Eurowings is expected in 2027, and the delivery of all ordered aircraft should be realized by 2032. The new aircraft will completely replace Eurowings’ fleet of Airbus A319s and older Airbus A320 models. Compared to the Airbus A319s, the Boeing will offer 39 more seats per aircraft, and its range is also noticeably greater. The redesigned cabin will provide passengers with a high level of comfort and a modern travel experience in line with today’s high airline standards.

Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of the Lufthansa Group, Carsten Spohr, said on this occasion: “Eurowings has established itself as the European point-to-point airline of the Lufthansa Group with a convincing strategy and thanks to its excellent employees in an extremely competitive market. The company’s strategic focus on expanding its tourism business and its consistent expansion in Europe has paid off for the entire Lufthansa Group. Our decision today is a well-deserved and strong signal for the successful future of Eurowings.”

Eurowings CEO Jens Bischof added: “Economic success makes Eurowings attractive for investment. At the same time, we have a responsibility to reconcile economic and environmental issues. With 40 state-of-the-art aircraft, we are laying the foundation for a successful future for Eurowings that is geared towards ambitious sustainability goals. The largest investment in the history of our company shows that we are rapidly making progress towards low-emission flying – through significantly lower fuel consumption, lower emissions and significantly less noise. The high cost efficiency of the new jets also allows us to continue to offer fair and attractive ticket prices to Eurowings customers. Without such a technological breakthrough, the airline will hardly be able to successfully operate in the market of the 2030s.”

With the aforementioned investment, Eurowings, as the second largest German airline, will operate one of the youngest fleets in European air traffic in the near future.
