Norwegian orders 30 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft

Norwegian Group has signed an agreement with Boeing for the purchase of 30 737 MAX 8 aircraft, further strengthening its growth strategy and fleet modernization. The new deal, announced on September 26 in Oslo, represents the group’s first direct order from the U.S. manufacturer since 2017 and increases Norwegian’s total 737 MAX order book to 80 aircraft.

CEO Geir Karlsen emphasized the importance of the agreement: “This milestone order on attractive terms secures our fleet growth in a way that supports our planned development and sustainability goals. The new aircraft will enable us to reduce emissions and provide passengers with an even better flying experience, while at the same time reinforcing our long-standing partnership with Boeing.”

Since 2007, Norwegian has primarily operated narrowbody Boeing aircraft in its fleet. It was also the first European airline to take delivery of the 737 MAX and the first to use the 737-8 on transatlantic routes. After restructuring its order book in 2022, the airline confirmed the purchase of 50 aircraft with options for an additional 30 – which have now been converted into a firm order.

Boeing highlighted that the new contract is a vote of confidence in the 737 program. “The additional 30 aircraft will support Norwegian’s ambition to be the first choice for travelers in Scandinavia and enable expansion across Europe and beyond. Since 2007, Norwegian has ordered more than 200 Boeing narrowbodies, and we are honored that they continue to be our partner,” said Brad McMullen, Boeing’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing.

The Boeing 737 MAX 8 can seat up to 200 passengers and has a range of 6,480 kilometers. Compared to previous generations, the model consumes up to 20% less fuel and produces significantly lower CO₂ emissions, making it a key element in fleet renewal.

Norwegian Group today employs more than 8,200 people and operates two leading Nordic airlines – Norwegian Air Shuttle and Widerøe, which was integrated into the group in 2024. Norwegian Air Shuttle remains the country’s largest carrier, with a fleet of 86 Boeing 737-800 and 737 MAX 8 aircraft, transporting 22.6 million passengers last year.
