While numerous European regional carriers are gradually withdrawing older turboprop aircraft, Widerøe continues to invest in extending the service life and improving the availability of its De Havilland Canada Dash 8 fleet. Two new agreements announced during the Farnborough International Airshow indicate that the Norwegian carrier does not view the aircraft family merely as a temporary solution, but as a central part of its operations for years to come.
Widerøe has expanded its participation in the Extended Service Program PLUS, known as ESP+, by adding another four Dash 8-100 aircraft. The move increases the number of aircraft covered by the programme to 14. The carrier became the programme’s launch customer in 2022, initially enrolling ten aircraft and securing options to include another ten.
ESP+ increases the permitted service life of the Dash 8-100 from 120,000 to as many as 160,000 flight cycles. Since one cycle consists of a take-off and landing, the increase is particularly important for Widerøe’s network, where aircraft operate numerous short flights every day between smaller Norwegian cities, towns and island communities.
According to De Havilland Canada, a Dash 8-100 that completes the programme receives the highest approved flight-cycle limit of any commercial aircraft. ESP+ includes technical inspections, structural assessments and any required modifications needed to confirm that the aircraft can safely continue operating beyond its previous limit.
“The Dash 8-100 remains an important part of our regional network, and ESP+ provides us with a practical and cost-effective way to extend the life of these aircraft while maintaining the safety, reliability and performance on which our operations depend,” said Widerøe Director of Aircraft Trading Werner Skaue.
At the same time, Widerøe and De Havilland Canada signed an agreement introducing a revised maintenance programme for the Dash 8-400 fleet. Widerøe will become the first operator to implement a programme increasing the interval between scheduled A checks from 800 to 1,200 flight hours.
De Havilland Canada said the programme would apply to 17 Dash 8-400 aircraft and that implementation was expected to be completed over the following 12 months.
A checks are among the lighter forms of scheduled aircraft maintenance and include inspections of systems, structures and the aircraft’s general condition. Increasing the interval by 50 percent will allow Widerøe to reduce the number of planned maintenance stops, improve fleet availability and lower labour and material costs.
The change does not represent a reduction in safety oversight. It is based on operational data, accumulated experience with the aircraft type and approved revisions to the maintenance programme.
A similar approach was introduced in 2021 for Widerøe’s Dash 8-100, -200 and -300 aircraft, when the intervals between A and C checks were extended. The latest agreement therefore represents a continuation of the carrier’s strategy of extracting the longest and most efficient possible operating life from its existing aircraft.
Widerøe’s publicly listed fleet structure illustrates just how important the Dash 8 remains to the airline. The company lists 26 Dash 8-100 and -200 aircraft with 39 seats, three Dash 8-300s with 50 seats, 16 Dash 8-400s with 78 seats and only three Embraer E190-E2 jets with 110 seats.
De Havilland Canada’s latest announcement refers to 17 Dash 8-400 aircraft covered by the new maintenance programme, which could indicate a more recent fleet change that has not yet been reflected in Widerøe’s public fleet overview.
The Embraers are primarily used on longer and busier routes between larger cities and on international services, but they are not a direct replacement for the smaller Dash 8-100 and -200 aircraft. Widerøe describes the smaller Dash 8 variants as the workhorses of its fleet and as one of the most recognisable elements of its identity.
Their 39-seat capacity, ability to operate from short runways and suitability for frequent flight cycles make them difficult to replace across Norway’s regional network.
A significant part of that network connects remote communities with regional centres, often through airports with short runways, demanding approaches and rapidly changing weather conditions. In such an environment, larger regional jets are not merely more expensive to operate, but may also be unsuitable for certain routes.
A newly produced direct replacement in the approximately 40-seat category is also not widely available on the market.
For Widerøe, investment in the existing fleet is therefore about more than reducing costs. Extending the structural life of the Dash 8-100 and reducing the frequency of scheduled maintenance for the Dash 8-400 will allow the airline to preserve a network tailored to Norway’s specific geography without prematurely moving to larger aircraft that could undermine the economics of lower-demand routes.
The latest agreements do not mean that Widerøe intends to keep its existing aircraft indefinitely. Their replacement will eventually become unavoidable, particularly because many of the smaller aircraft were manufactured several decades ago.
However, the decisions announced at Farnborough clearly show that the transition will not take place suddenly. Widerøe intends to continue maintaining and optimising its existing fleet until a suitable successor becomes available—one capable of providing a similar combination of capacity, operating economics and short-runway performance.
For De Havilland Canada, the agreements also confirm the importance of supporting the existing Dash 8 fleet. Production of passenger Dash 8-400 aircraft is not currently active, but the manufacturer is working to keep the worldwide fleet in service for decades through life-extension programmes, refurbishment of used aircraft, spare-parts support and maintenance optimisation.
Widerøe is one of the clearest examples of that approach. Rather than viewing the Dash 8 as a remnant of the past, the Norwegian carrier continues to adapt the aircraft for the future.
For an airline whose network depends on dozens of short routes and small airports, proven turboprop aircraft still have no simple replacement.
