Gradual retirement of Lufthansa Airbus A340-600

Following the release of its financial report for the first two quarters of the year, which highlighted operational and financial challenges, Lufthansa has announced plans to phase out several wide-body aircraft types from its fleet by the end of 2028. These include the Airbus A330-200, A340-300, A340-600, and Boeing 747-400.

In a recent statement reported by the aviation portal ch-aviation, a Lufthansa spokesperson confirmed that the Airbus A340-600 will already be excluded from operations by the winter flight schedule of 2025.

Compared to the current winter schedule, Lufthansa plans a gradual reduction in A340-600 flights starting in early 2025, continuing through the summer schedule. The full retirement of this aircraft type is expected by the end of October 2025.

Currently, Lufthansa operates 10 active A340-600 aircraft. These will be replaced by 10 Airbus A350-1000s, ordered in 2023, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2026. The airline’s remaining fleet includes the Airbus A350-900, A330-300, A380-800, and Boeing 747-8 and 787-9 Dreamliner.

According to Lufthansa’s 2025 summer schedule, the Airbus A380 will continue to serve routes connecting Munich with key destinations in the United States, including Boston, New York, Washington, and Los Angeles, as well as Delhi.
