American Airlines bases Airbus A321XLR in New York and prepares for transatlantic flights

American Airlines plans to open a new base for the Airbus A321XLR at John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK), and according to leaked information, the first transatlantic flights are expected to begin in March 2026. The news comes just a few weeks after the airline announced that the aircraft would debut on U.S. transcontinental routes during the Christmas holidays, reports View from the Wing.

Internal documents, also cited by FlightDrama, state that American has launched a pilot recruitment process, with plans to have at least 40 pilots assigned to the new New York base by February 2026. Although it was initially announced that the A321XLR would primarily serve the JFK–LAX and JFK–SFO routes, it is now clear that its primary mission will be the expansion of the transatlantic network.

American Airlines has ordered a total of 50 A321XLR aircraft, with the first unit arriving this summer. The new type will enable the launch of routes to smaller European markets such as Edinburgh, Geneva, or Lisbon, where operating larger Boeing 787s would carry significantly higher financial risk. Currently, American’s transatlantic offering from New York is limited to just seven destinations, placing the airline at a disadvantage compared to its main competitors, Delta and United.

At the same time, the new A321XLR will also replace the older A321 fleet on premium domestic routes, offering passengers a more modern cabin with business class in a 1-1 configuration and seatback entertainment screens.

The combination of transcontinental and transatlantic roles makes the A321XLR a key aircraft in American Airlines’ future network, and according to View from the Wing, the Christmas holidays of 2025 may mark the first time passengers fly this model on the route between New York and Los Angeles.
