Italy’s flag carrier ITA Airways has officially joined Star Alliance, completing its integration into the world’s largest airline alliance. The move strengthens Italy’s position within a global network of connected carriers and opens up new travel opportunities and services for passengers.
The milestone was marked during a ceremony at the Piazza di Spagna Lounge in Terminal 3 of Rome Fiumicino Airport, attended by key industry figures, including ITA Airways CEO Joerg Eberhart, Star Alliance CEO Theo Panagiotoulias, and representatives of Lufthansa Group, which played a key mentoring role in the integration process.
From April 1, ITA Airways is fully connected to the alliance’s global network, integrating its hubs in Rome and Milan with the network of 17 Star Alliance member airlines already serving those airports. Passengers can now benefit from seamless travel through features such as through check-in, reciprocal frequent flyer recognition, and access to a wide network of lounges worldwide.
Membership also brings tangible operational benefits. Passengers can earn and redeem miles across partner programmes, enjoy priority services, and access alliance lounges, including those operated by ITA Airways in Rome, Milan, and Catania. The focus is on enhancing the overall travel experience through improved connectivity and standardized services across the alliance.
The integration process lasted several months and involved close collaboration between expert teams from ITA Airways and the Lufthansa Group. This cooperation enabled the alignment of operational, commercial, and IT systems, ensuring a smooth transition into the alliance.
ITA Airways carries more than 16 million passengers annually and adds over 350 daily flights to the alliance network, with a strong domestic and regional footprint. This strengthens connectivity between Southern Europe and key global markets while also improving access within Italy.
With the addition of ITA Airways, Star Alliance now comprises 26 member airlines offering more than 17,500 daily flights across a global network spanning over 190 countries, further reinforcing its position as the world’s leading airline alliance.
