Wizz Air to close its Vienna base after seven years of operations

Wizz Air is closing its Vienna base after seven years of operations. The decision follows a strategic review of the airline’s operations and fleet allocation, with the company stating that its ultra-low-cost model has become incompatible with rising charges in the Austrian capital. The closure will take place in two phases – on October 26, 2025, two aircraft will be withdrawn and flights to Bilbao and London Gatwick suspended, while the remaining three aircraft and all other routes will cease on March 15, 2026.

The Vienna base was launched in 2018 and currently operates five Airbus A321neo aircraft on 28 routes to 20 countries. Despite building a strong position in the Austrian market, Wizz Air points out that costs in Vienna have risen significantly in recent years, including airport charges and taxes, making continued operations unsustainable.

The airline emphasized that all affected employees will receive support during the transition, including the possibility of relocation to other Wizz Air bases or alternative roles within the organization. Passengers with bookings beyond the suspension dates will be contacted directly and offered either a refund in WIZZ credit or rebooking on other flights operated by the airline.

Despite the closure, Wizz Air says it remains committed to Austrian travelers and the Central European region, with its network continuing to grow from Bratislava and Budapest.

“We recently celebrated seven years of flying from Vienna, during which we provided Austrian passengers with affordable and convenient travel options. However, the significant increase in costs in Vienna has made continued operations unsustainable. This was a difficult but necessary decision to safeguard our long-term competitiveness. I would like to thank our colleagues in Vienna for their dedication and our passengers for their understanding,” said Mauro Peneda, Managing Director of Wizz Air Malta.
