Spanish national carrier Iberia has been the first operator of the Airbus A321XLR narrow-body aircraft since 2024. Following the aircraft’s introduction into the fleet, the A321XLR operates the long-haul Madrid-Boston route since November 2024.
After Iberia’s Washington route was postponed in January 2025, the aircraft type resumed it, connecting Madrid-Barajas and Washington-Dulles, starting on April 12, 2025. By taking over the route, the A321XLR began operations on its second transatlantic route. By August 2025, six weekly operations to the US capital are planned, with daily flights available in September and October. The route will no longer be seasonal, but will operate year-round.
With its improved fuel efficiency, lower carbon footprint and enhanced passenger experience, the A321XLR is fully aligned with Iberia’s sustainability and environmental goals, while also delivering the comfort and reliability that passengers expect on long-haul flights.
As a result, Iberia will operate up to 140 weekly flights to the United States in the summer, up 14% from 2024, offering the market around 1.1 million seats.
In addition to improving direct connectivity between Europe and the United States, the introduction of Iberia’s A321XLR on a second transatlantic route has also set a new benchmark for long-haul services achievable with a narrow-body aircraft of this type.
