Milan Bergamo Airport suspended all flights on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, following a tragic incident in which an unidentified man was fatally sucked into the engine of an aircraft preparing for takeoff.
The accident occurred at 10:20 AM on a taxiway, while a Volotea Airbus A319 was in its final preparations for departure. According to initial reports, the victim was neither a passenger nor an airport employee. It appears he had gained unauthorized access to a restricted area near the runway.
Aviation and security services are currently conducting an investigation to determine how the individual was able to breach such a tightly controlled zone, raising serious concerns about airport security protocols.
The tragic event caused significant disruption to air traffic. Several inbound flights were diverted to nearby airports, including Milan Malpensa, Verona, and Bologna, while numerous departures were cancelled.
Among the affected flights were services between Italy and Croatia:
-
Flight FR 5148 from Milan (Bergamo) to Zadar, scheduled to depart at 11:10 AM and arrive at 1:00 PM – cancelled.
-
Flight FR 5149 from Zadar to Milan (Bergamo), scheduled to arrive at 1:55 PM – cancelled.
Passengers are advised to check the status of their flights and contact their airlines for rebooking or alternative arrangements.
