Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), the parent company of national carrier Malaysia Airlines, has announced an order for an additional 20 Airbus A330-900 aircraft, doubling the airline’s future A330neo fleet to a total of 40 aircraft. The announcement was made during the official visit of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to France.
MAG first selected the A330neo in 2022 as part of its widebody fleet renewal programme, with an initial order of 20 aircraft. Four have already been delivered and are operating on routes from Kuala Lumpur to Melbourne, Auckland, and Bali. The new aircraft features a completely redesigned premium cabin interior, reflecting a modern approach to comfort and passenger experience.
MAG’s Group Managing Director, Datuk Captain Izham Ismail, stated that the A330neo offers the ideal balance of operational efficiency, range, and cabin comfort, supporting the company’s network and growth strategy. He emphasized that the aircraft, with its improved fuel efficiency and flexibility for both regional and long-haul routes, enables MAG to deliver a product that aligns with its premium positioning – modern, streamlined, and focused on passenger needs. He added that this new order affirms the long-term vision of building a future-ready fleet that supports sustainable growth, provides consistent value to passengers, and strengthens competitiveness in key markets.
Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Executive Vice President of Commercial Aircraft Sales at Airbus, expressed satisfaction with the continued partnership with MAG and noted that the repeat order confirms the A330neo’s outstanding performance, efficiency, and comfort, as well as its popularity among the world’s premium carriers.
The A330-900 aircraft are powered by the latest generation Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines and are capable of flying up to 7,200 nautical miles, or 13,300 kilometres, non-stop. They are equipped with the award-winning Airspace cabin, which offers more personal space, enlarged overhead storage, a new lighting system, and access to the latest inflight entertainment and connectivity features. As of the end of May 2025, the Airbus A330 Family had received more than 1,800 firm orders from over 130 customers worldwide. All current production Airbus aircraft, including the A330neo, are capable of operating with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel, with a target of reaching 100% SAF capability by 2030.
