First Air-to-Air refueling with Croatian Rafale jets

Members of the 191st Fighter Squadron of the Croatian Air Force (HRZ) participated alongside the French Air and Space Force in the PEGASE 25 military exercise, held on April 29 and 30, 2025, in Croatian airspace. In addition to Croatian and French Rafale jets, the exercise also involved two French A400M transport aircraft and an A330 MRTT aerial refueling tanker.

The goal of the exercise was to enhance allied interoperability and strengthen Europe’s strategic autonomy. This deployment is part of France’s implementation of the NATO Agile Combat Employment (ACE – FRA-ACE) concept and Air Shielding missions, aimed at reinforcing the security of the Alliance’s eastern flank.

This event was historic for the Croatian Air Force, as it marked the first time Croatian Rafales conducted air-to-air refueling, in this case with the French A330 MRTT. Additionally, joint training and flight exercises were carried out, confirming the high skill level of Croatian pilots.

“We are very happy to have you here and look forward to working with you today, tomorrow, and in the future,” said Brigadier Željko Ninić, Chief of Staff and Deputy Commander of the Croatian Air Force, addressing Brigadier General Patrice Hugret, Commander of the French Air Operational Brigade. Ninić emphasized the significance of this exercise for the HRZ and the 191st Squadron, especially as it took place shortly after Croatia’s fighter squadron achieved full operational capability. “We have demonstrated a shared level of readiness, interoperability, and host nation support,” he stated.

Brigadier General Hugret highlighted the importance of agility and resilience in air forces to provide support wherever and whenever needed.

The French Ambassador to Croatia, Fabien Fieschi, thanked Croatian authorities for their cooperation and stressed that Croatia has become a key partner for France. “Croatia is not only a fully integrated member of NATO and the EU but also a strategic partner for France. Through joint efforts and knowledge-sharing, we contribute to strengthening European and NATO defense capabilities,” said Fieschi.

The PEGASE 25 exercise is further proof of the strong military cooperation between Croatia and France, as well as their shared commitment to safeguarding European security.
