On Monday 2 September 2024, Cathay Pacific’s Airbus A350-1000 operating flight CX383 from Hong Kong to Zurich was forced to return to Hong Kong shortly after takeoff due to an engine failure. Upon landing, it was discovered that a specific engine component had failed—an issue that had never been reported on any Airbus A350 aircraft before. As a result, Cathay Pacific is now in contact with the engine manufacturers and regulators to address the problem.
To ensure the safety and reliability of its fleet, Cathay Pacific will conduct inspections on all 48 Airbus A350 aircraft in its service. During these inspections, it was found that the affected component needs to be replaced in certain engines. The airline has already secured the necessary parts, and work is currently underway. However, a number of aircraft will need to be temporarily grounded for a few days, leading to the cancellation of 24 return flights. Affected passengers will be provided with alternative transportation options or offered the opportunity to change their travel dates at no additional cost.
