CAE introduces immersive Ridge 3D tool into air traffic controller training

CAE presented an expanded application of its advanced 3D visualization tool, CAE Ridge, at Airspace Asia Pacific 2025 in Hong Kong, announcing that the system will now be integrated into training programs for air traffic controllers. The tool, already well established in military environments, is being adapted for both civil and defence Air Traffic Services to enhance modern training needs.

With this approach, traditional tabletop exercises are transformed into interactive three-dimensional environments where instructors and trainees can jointly analyse procedures, observe complex scenarios, and build situational awareness under realistic conditions. This accelerates the development of essential mental models of airports, airspace structures, and traffic patterns—crucial steps before progressing to high-fidelity simulators and on-the-job training.

As global aviation continues to grow in complexity, CAE emphasizes that such technology is an important step toward more efficient and flexible training systems. “CAE Ridge represents a significant advancement in preparing the next generation of controllers,” said Emmanuel Levitte, the company’s Chief Technology Officer, noting that early use of immersive 3D visualization helps trainees acquire competencies faster and shorten the path to licensing.

Marie-Christine Cloutier, Vice President for Strategy, Business Performance and Marketing, added that the tool bridges military and civil expertise while remaining scalable and commercially accessible. “CAE Ridge demonstrates how combining simulation know-how with synthetic environments can empower both instructors and learners,” she said.

Beyond initial training, CAE Ridge can support pre-simulator preparation, debriefings, procedure rehearsals, transition training for qualified controllers, CBTA scenario development and operational reviews. It can be used in classrooms, remote sessions or briefings, enabling organizations to adapt more quickly to change and maintain high levels of safety and performance.
