The first Airbus A321XLR joins the American Airlines fleet

American Airlines has become the first U.S. carrier to introduce the Airbus A321XLR into its fleet, and the only airline in the world to offer this aircraft type with a three-class cabin configuration. The first aircraft was delivered on October 22 from Airbus’ Hamburg assembly line and will enter service on December 18, operating the inaugural flight between New York (JFK) and Los Angeles (LAX).

The airline highlights that the new A321XLR delivers a premium travel experience thanks to its Flagship Suite seats, which convert into fully flat beds. These seats offer additional privacy through sliding doors, more personal space, and numerous thoughtful details, including wireless charging, a cocktail tray, and personal reading lights. Each aircraft features 155 seats in total, including 20 in the Flagship Suite, 12 in Premium Economy, and 123 in the Main Cabin.

“Designed for long journeys with comfort and style in mind, the A321XLR represents our commitment to delivering a world-class travel experience,” said Heather Garboden, American’s Chief Customer Officer. “Whether our customers are flying coast to coast or across the ocean, this aircraft brings a new level of comfort and elegance.”

With the introduction of the A321XLR, American Airlines is also expanding its exclusive Flagship Suite services, which include priority check-in, security screening, boarding, and baggage handling, as well as access to the luxurious Greenwich Lounge at JFK Airport. There, travelers can enjoy premium dining and expertly crafted cocktails in a refined, relaxing atmosphere.

Onboard, passengers will be served multi-course meals paired with award-winning wines, while comfort kits include high-end skincare products, soft duvets, and dual-sided pillows featuring a “cool touch” fabric on one side.

Premium Economy passengers will benefit from enhanced comfort with extended leg rests, winged headrests for added privacy, wireless charging, and full hot meal service. Each seat also features a personal entertainment screen, multiple power options, and an upgraded amenity kit with luxury skincare products.

Initially, the A321XLR will operate on transcontinental U.S. routes before gradually expanding to international destinations during the first half of 2026. With this new addition, American Airlines reinforces its strategy of fleet modernization and raising comfort standards across all travel classes.
