The European Union is seeking to ban carry-on baggage and seat selection fees and standardize inconsistent airline policies to eliminate hidden costs that affect airline ticket prices, ch-aviation reports.
This is stated in the resolution adopted by the European Parliament on October 4, asking the European Commission to present concrete political measures against the surcharge for hand luggage. Also, the resolution requires the EU to define the scope and specific requirements of “reasonable” weight and hand luggage dimensions.
When revising the current EU Air Services Regulation, the Commission should address issues that lead to hidden costs for passengers, such as fees imposed for seat allocation and the current complexity of offers, i.e. airline baggage fees. The goal is to regulate the composition of the final price, it is stated. The Commission has already launched a review of the regulation.
The European lawmaker called on EU member states to ensure compliance with this decision and, in the meantime, to force carriers to display the hand baggage allowance and fees on ticket prices and flight schedules to strengthen consumer protection.
Last month, the European Parliament’s Committee on Petitions (PETI) passed a motion calling on airlines operating within the EU not to penalize passengers for carrying hand luggage.
