SWISS welcomes its first Airbus A350 in Zurich

SWISS’s first Airbus A350-900 landed today, October 9, at its new home base in Zurich Airport. The aircraft, registered as HB-IFA, departed from Toulouse earlier in the afternoon and touched down at 15:25 local time, where it was greeted by numerous employees and aviation enthusiasts. This brand-new widebody twinjet marks the beginning of a new era in both operations and passenger experience for SWISS.

The new A350 features the next-generation SWISS Senses cabin, developed in collaboration with the Lufthansa Group. The concept focuses on individuality, calmness, and sophisticated design, embodying the signature Swiss quality and hospitality. Passengers can expect more space, improved seat ergonomics, advanced lighting, and a highly personalized onboard service.

The aircraft also sports a special Wanderlust livery, designed as a colorful tribute to Switzerland and its diversity. The delivery flight from Toulouse to Zurich was operated by three SWISS pilots, and the aircraft’s arrival was witnessed by a large crowd from the airport’s observation deck.

Today is a great day for our company,” said SWISS CEO Jens Fehlinger. “With the Airbus A350, we’re entering a new era of long-haul flying. This aircraft represents everything we strive to be – efficient, technologically advanced, and clearly positioned as a premium airline from Switzerland and for Switzerland.”

SWISS Chief Commercial Officer Heike Birlenbach added: “Our new SWISS Senses cabin brings air travel comfort and quality to new heights. Passengers will enjoy more space, a calmer atmosphere, and a more personal travel experience – from the lighting above their seat to every detail of the inflight service.”

The Airbus A350 is widely regarded as the most advanced widebody aircraft in service today. Thanks to its fuel-efficient engines and optimized aerodynamics, it consumes about 25% less fuel than previous-generation aircraft and produces significantly lower CO₂ emissions. It is also noticeably quieter, and its composite structure allows for lower cabin pressure and higher humidity, providing enhanced passenger comfort.

By 2031, SWISS plans to add a total of ten Airbus A350 aircraft to its fleet. Over the next few weeks, the first aircraft will operate short-haul European routes to support crew training. The inaugural passenger flight is scheduled for October 25 on the Zurich – Palma de Mallorca route, while the first long-haul service, Zurich – Boston, will begin on November 20. This will also mark the debut of the new SWISS Senses cabin and the airline’s updated long-haul inflight service.

Photos of the A350’s arrival in Zurich are available in the SWISS online media center, and a recording of the live stream of today’s event will be published shortly.
