Ruđer Bošković Airport certified on the path to achieving carbon neutrality

Ruđer Bošković Airport has continued to strengthen its commitment to sustainable development and environmental protection and has successfully achieved Level 2 certification within the international Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program implemented by Airports Council International (ACI).

The Level 2 – Reduction certificate confirms that greenhouse gas emissions are systematically monitored and reduced within its own operations, in accordance with international standards and guidelines of the aforementioned ACA program. The certificate confirms Dubrovnik Airport’s commitment to sustainable business and further reducing its carbon footprint.

Ruđer Bošković Airport thereby strengthens its position among European airports that proactively manage emissions and contribute to the global fight against climate change.

In 2024, Dubrovnik Airport’s total emissions amounted to 2,040.7 tons of CO₂ equivalent, which represents a decrease compared to previous years, and especially compared to the three-year average. Total emissions consist of all emissions from stationary and mobile sources and electricity consumption. The goal is to reach net zero emissions by 2042, which includes a 90% reduction in emissions per passenger compared to the base year 2010.

This is planned to be achieved through a series of concrete measures. For example: gradual replacement of internal combustion vehicles and equipment with electric alternatives, introduction and implementation of energy and environmental management systems according to ISO standards, modernization of lighting systems (LED spotlights and control systems), design and installation of photovoltaic power plants, energy renovation of existing buildings and replacement of cooling systems.

Achieving ACA Level 2 is an important step for the airport on its path towards carbon neutrality. The certificate confirms successful monitoring, analysis and systematic reduction of emissions in all segments of the airport’s operations. Ruđer Bošković Airport will continue to work on the implementation of concrete and measurable solutions to reduce its carbon footprint and actively contribute to the sustainable development of the region and the wider community.
