Lufthansa Technik Malta completes first cabin modification on Boeing 787

Lufthansa Technik has successfully completed its first passenger cabin modification on a Boeing 787 Dreamliner at its European Center of Excellence for widebody base maintenance services in Malta, marking an important step in expanding its service portfolio in this segment.

The comprehensive project involved the full removal of the existing cabin and the installation of a new seating configuration, along with upgrades to cabin monuments aimed at improving passenger comfort and operational efficiency. The work was carried out in close cooperation with aircraft manufacturer Boeing, which contracted and supported the modification package, as well as with the operator Lufthansa.

The execution itself was technically demanding, including infrastructure adjustments in Malta to accommodate larger cabin components. Additional complexity arose from logistics, as the entire existing cabin was replaced with a new one. According to plans, six more such cabin modifications are scheduled to be completed at the same facility by the end of the year.

The installation of the new Allegris cabin, considered a key element of the airline’s future onboard product, further underlines the significance of the project. Such modifications play an important role in accelerating the introduction of new cabin concepts into operational service.

At the same time, Lufthansa Technik Malta continues to expand its capacities. A new 6,400-square-meter hangar is currently under construction, specifically intended for work on 787 aircraft. Once completed, expected by the end of 2026, the facility will be able to accommodate one widebody aircraft, along with three additional parking positions for narrowbody aircraft. This will increase the site’s total capacity to four hangars capable of servicing nearly all commercial Airbus aircraft, except the A380, as well as the 787.

The project also carries strategic weight, as Lufthansa Technik became the first and currently only Boeing Licensed Service Center for 787 cabin modifications back in 2024. In this role, the company is able not only to perform modifications but also to design new cabin solutions, provide engineering services, and certify completed projects in line with customer requirements.

With this development, Malta further strengthens its position as a key hub within the global widebody maintenance network, while Lufthansa Technik reinforces its ambitions in the high-value segment of complex MRO services for modern long-haul aircraft.
