Istanbul becomes first airport in Europe with three independent runways

Istanbul has become the first European airport to implement a Triple Independent Runway Operations (TIRO) system, enabling simultaneous takeoffs and landings. This advancement will significantly increase air traffic capacity and strengthen Turkey’s position as a key hub in global aviation.

The official launch ceremony took place on April 17, attended by high-ranking officials, including Turkish Minister of Transport Abdulkadir Uraloğlu and Turkish Airlines Chairman Prof. Ahmet Bolat. Three Turkish Airlines aircraft took off simultaneously during the demonstration, showcasing the system’s technical feasibility.

Minister Uraloğlu emphasized that Istanbul now competes with the world’s leading airports: “This is a historic step for Turkey and Europe. Istanbul will become even more critical in global aviation logistics, offering passengers faster and safer services.”

Turkish Airlines Chairman Prof. Bolat added that the new capability would enhance operational efficiency: “This is a crucial milestone in our mission to be a leading global carrier with the best flight punctuality.”

The TIRO system will increase the airport’s capacity from 120 to 148 aircraft movements per hour while reducing delays and CO₂ emissions. iGA Istanbul Airport, which aims to serve 200 million passengers annually, is expected to become one of the world’s most important transit hubs.
