IndiGo doubles its order for Airbus A350-900 aircraft

India’s largest airline, IndiGo, has confirmed an additional order for 30 Airbus A350-900 aircraft, bringing its total commitment for this model to 60 units. The Memorandum of Understanding signed in June has now been converted into a firm order, marking the airline’s next major step towards entering the long-haul market.

This order represents a strategic milestone for IndiGo as it prepares to launch long-haul international operations with the A350 — an aircraft known for its range, efficiency, and passenger comfort. “Today is a special day for IndiGo as we reaffirm our commitment to expanding our international network and offering unmatched connectivity to our customers,” said Pieter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo. “Converting our MoU into a firm order for thirty additional A350-900s reflects our confidence in the future of Indian aviation and in our partnership with Airbus. These aircraft will play a pivotal role in helping us connect India with more destinations across the globe and in achieving our aspiration to become a leading global aviation player by 2030.”

Airbus emphasized that the A350 perfectly fits IndiGo’s long-term ambitions. “The A350 delivers exceptional fuel efficiency, range, and passenger comfort, aligning perfectly with IndiGo’s growth plans and long-haul expansion strategy. This milestone strengthens our partnership with one of the fastest-growing airlines in the world,” said Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, EVP Sales, Commercial Aircraft at Airbus.

India, currently the world’s fastest-growing aviation market, is witnessing a strong surge in international air travel driven by economic expansion and rising household incomes. The A350 is widely seen as an ideal aircraft to meet the country’s growing demand for long-range connectivity.

Airbus has been a strategic partner in India’s aviation development for more than half a century. While the A320 Family aircraft have played a key role in expanding domestic air travel, the A350 is now emerging as the cornerstone for Indian carriers entering the international market.

The A350-900 is among the most advanced widebody aircraft in the 300–410 seat category, featuring state-of-the-art aerodynamics, extensive use of composite materials, and new-generation engines that together deliver a 25% reduction in fuel burn, operating costs, and CO₂ emissions compared to previous-generation aircraft. All Airbus aircraft, including the A350, are already certified to operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), with Airbus targeting full 100% SAF capability by 2030.

By the end of September 2025, Airbus had secured more than 1,400 A350 orders from 63 customers worldwide, confirming its position as one of the most successful widebody aircraft of its generation.
