Climate activists blocked the runways at the largest German airport – Frankfurt. Reuters reports that flight operations have meanwhile continued, but the press service of Frankfurt Airport reported that around 140 of today’s planned 1,400 flights had been canceled.
In a press release from the climate activist group “Last Generation”, they pointed out that 6 activists cut the fence in several places and blocked “various key points” of the runways. They carried banners with the words “Oil Kills”.
Earlier this morning, Lufthansa informed passengers that the situation is gradually normalizing, but advised passengers to check the status of their flight: “Due to a police operation in the course of a disruptive action by climate activists, no arrivals and departures took place at Frankfurt Airport in the morning hours of 25 July 2024. Flight operations is currently stabilizing now that all runways are usable again.”
Flights from Frankfurt to Croatia and vice versa were not canceled, but there are delays.
Reuters reports that the German Minister of the Interior, Nancy Faeser, said that today’s action is “dangerous, stupid and criminal”. Her ministry wants to punish unauthorized incursions into airport areas with two years in prison.
