Avation orders five additional ATR 72-600 aircraft

Singapore-based lessor Avation has further strengthened its long-standing partnership with aircraft manufacturer ATR by confirming an order for five additional ATR 72-600 turboprops. The deal represents the exercise of previously secured purchase rights under a framework agreement signed back in 2011, bringing Avation’s total firm ATR orders to 54 aircraft.

According to the manufacturer, deliveries of the newly ordered aircraft are scheduled for 2028 and 2029, underscoring the continuity and stability of a partnership that has now spanned 15 years. Over that period, Avation has built a significant turboprop portfolio, currently comprising 27 ATR aircraft placed with operators worldwide. In just the past six months, the lessor has successfully deployed ATR aircraft with three new airline customers.

Avation notes that the latest order supports its long-term growth strategy and enhances its ability to serve airline demand, particularly in high-growth regional markets. Executive Chairman Jeff Chatfield emphasized that the move converts existing purchase rights into firm orders, further expanding the company’s order book for the late 2020s.

A key focus is placed on the operational and economic advantages of the ATR 72-600, widely regarded as one of the most efficient regional aircraft in service today. Its low fuel burn and competitive seat-mile costs make it an attractive solution for short-haul routes, as well as for replacing older, less efficient aircraft. As a result, the turboprop segment is gaining renewed importance, particularly in the context of sustainability and cost optimization.

Industry forecasts further support this trend, with demand expected for more than 2,000 new turboprop aircraft worldwide over the next two decades, driven by both growth and fleet replacement needs.

ATR highlights that lessors such as Avation play a critical role in expanding the reach of its aircraft. Many airlines’ first experience ATR operations through leasing arrangements, which often leads to direct purchases of new aircraft in the future.

This latest order therefore represents not only a continuation of a successful partnership between Avation and ATR, but also a strong signal of confidence in the turboprop segment as a key component of the future of regional aviation—particularly in delivering sustainable and efficient connectivity to smaller and remote markets.
