American Airlines has announced a major modernization of its narrowbody fleet that will bring seatback entertainment screens to every seat while significantly increasing the share of premium seating. The airline also plans to introduce 4K displays, Bluetooth connectivity, USB-C fast charging and Starlink internet access.
The project represents one of American Airlines’ largest investments in the passenger experience in recent years. Under the announced plan, the share of premium seats on narrowbody departures is expected to increase from approximately 25% today to around 40% in the coming years.
Some of the existing Airbus A319 and A320 aircraft are already undergoing retrofits that will add an additional row of First Class seats. American’s future Boeing 737 MAX 10 aircraft will feature 24 First Class seats, while the Airbus A321neo fleet will also receive additional premium seating.
At the same time, the number of Main Cabin Extra seats will be increased across most of the narrowbody fleet, offering passengers additional legroom, earlier boarding, dedicated overhead bin space and a complimentary beverage. Cabin upgrades will also include redesigned seats, additional storage space and enhanced lighting.
One of the most notable changes, however, will be the return of individual seatback screens. In recent years, American Airlines has preferred a model across much of its domestic fleet in which passengers stream entertainment to their own devices, but the airline is now moving in a different direction.
All newly delivered Airbus and Boeing narrowbody aircraft from 2028 onward are expected to feature individual screens at every seat, while the same system will gradually be installed on existing aircraft during retrofit programmes. American currently operates more than 140 long-haul aircraft equipped with seatback entertainment systems.
The next-generation entertainment platform is expected to feature some of the largest displays available on narrowbody aircraft in the North American market, including larger screens in premium cabins. The airline has announced 4K resolution, a broad selection of movies, television programmes, music and games, as well as personalised content recommendations.
Passengers will also have access to enhanced interactive flight maps with destination information and real-time flight data. Every seat will be equipped with a USB-C fast-charging port, while Bluetooth connectivity will allow passengers to pair their own wireless headphones directly with the entertainment system.
American expects the installation of the new systems across the entire fleet to be completed by the beginning of the next decade.
The modernization will also complement the installation of Starlink satellite internet on narrowbody aircraft, which is currently scheduled to begin in 2027. American intends to combine high-speed connectivity with individual entertainment systems and an expanded premium offering.
“We’re making one of the most significant investments in the onboard experience in our history. From next-generation seatback entertainment at every seat to substantially more premium seating options, these enhancements will give our customers more ways to relax, stay connected and enjoy their journey,” said Heather Garboden, American Airlines’ Chief Customer Officer.
The aircraft upgrades are part of a broader investment cycle by the carrier. American is also investing in new and expanded Flagship and Admirals Club lounges, developing its Provisions by Admirals Club grab-and-go concept and expanding its onboard food and beverage offering.
The announced transformation also marks a significant shift in the airline’s strategy, with American once again embracing traditional individual seatback entertainment. Combined with Starlink and a higher share of premium seating, the carrier aims to bring the onboard product of its narrowbody fleet closer to the level traditionally associated with long-haul aircraft.
