American Airlines begins celebrating 100th anniversary

American Airlines will mark its 100th anniversary in 2026, placing it among a very small group of airlines with a full century of continuous operations. The company traces its origins back to 1926, when a mail flight between Chicago and St. Louis laid the foundations for what would later become one of the world’s largest air carriers.

The centennial celebrations begin in early 2026 and will continue throughout the year. The airline says the focus is on highlighting key milestones from its history while subtly involving passengers through visible but restrained anniversary elements integrated into everyday operations.

One of the most noticeable symbols of the centennial will be a special anniversary livery applied to a Boeing 737, an aircraft type that forms the backbone of the airline’s domestic and short-haul international network. The design blends American’s existing visual identity with new elements referencing longevity and continuity, without departing significantly from the airline’s familiar fleet appearance.

The centennial logo will also be gradually introduced across other touchpoints of the passenger journey, including digital platforms, airports, and aircraft cabins. A large portion of the fleet is expected to carry a dedicated anniversary marking, ensuring the centennial is present across daily operations throughout the network.

During the year, passengers can also expect limited-edition onboard products such as customized amenity kits and special in-flight food and beverage offerings. At the same time, the airline has launched a dedicated website focused on its history, providing an overview of key developments, fleet evolution, and the role of employees in shaping the company over the decades.

In its centennial communications, American Airlines also highlights its historical role in the development of commercial aviation, including early air cargo services, the introduction of airline loyalty programs, and the expansion of premium travel products that later became industry standards. Many of these initiatives are now commonplace across the global airline sector.

The anniversary is further reflected in co-branded financial products, with limited-edition credit cards featuring a commemorative design made available for a restricted period to both new and existing customers.

Today, American Airlines operates more than 6,000 flights per day to over 350 destinations in more than 60 countries, carrying more than 200 million passengers annually. Its operations are supported by approximately 130,000 employees, and the airline is a founding member of the oneworld global airline alliance, whose combined network serves more than 900 destinations worldwide. In that context, the centennial stands as a rare example of long-term continuity in an industry that has undergone profound technological, market, and structural changes over the past century.
