New Air Force One unveiled

U.S. President Donald Trump has presented a new Boeing 747-8 at Joint Base Andrews that will be used temporarily as part of the presidential aircraft fleet known as Air Force One. The luxury aircraft was donated to the United States by Qatar and has been prepared for presidential use after extensive modifications carried out by the U.S. Air Force.

The aircraft was originally owned by the Qatari royal family, and its value is estimated at around 400 million dollars. The U.S. Air Force said the key modifications required for its inclusion in the presidential fleet had been completed, including security systems, communications equipment, logistics support and advanced technology needed for its role as a “flying White House.” According to the same source, potential security risks related to the aircraft’s previous ownership were neutralized during the modification process.

Speaking at the presentation, Trump emphasized the aircraft’s luxury and quality of workmanship, saying it was a plane “unlike anything anyone has ever seen.” He thanked the Emir of Qatar for the donation and said the aircraft had been transformed into a representative and technologically advanced presidential jet. The interior has reportedly not been significantly altered, while the exterior has received a new red, white, blue, and gold paint scheme, departing from the traditional light-blue appearance of U.S. presidential aircraft.

According to Reuters, the aircraft was modified by L3Harris Technologies. In addition to communications and security systems, it has also been fitted with equipment required to protect the presidential aircraft. Following completion of the modifications, initial test and acceptance flights will take place, representing the final stage of system checks before the jet begins carrying the president.

The Qatari donation has been politically and legally controversial in Washington from the outset. Critics, including some Republicans, warned that accepting such a valuable gift from a foreign state raised questions of conflict of interest, security and constitutionality. The White House and the Pentagon have maintained that the process is legal, and it was previously announced that the aircraft would be transferred to Donald Trump’s presidential library after the end of his term.

The new 747-8 will not be a permanent solution for the U.S. presidential fleet. It will be used as an interim aircraft until Boeing delivers two new VC-25B aircraft, ordered as the long-term replacement for the current presidential Boeing 747-200Bs. Those aircraft have been in service since 1990, while the replacement program has faced years of delays and rising costs.

According to statements from the White House, one of the older presidential aircraft is now being retired from operational use. The other is expected to remain in the fleet until the arrival of Boeing’s new VC-25B aircraft. This gives the Qatari 747-8 the role of a temporary solution in the period between the aging fleet from the early 1990s and the next generation of U.S. presidential aircraft.

Although Trump described the aircraft’s presentation as a symbol of prestige and modernization of the U.S. presidential fleet, the case remains politically sensitive. Beyond the issue of the donation itself, the cost of the modifications has also drawn attention, with some U.S. media estimating it to be significantly higher than the value of the aircraft. For the U.S. administration, the jet represents a practical interim solution, while critics warn that it is a precedent that will continue to be questioned politically and legally for a long time.
