As part of wider measures for controlling the spread of COVID-19, the Greek Civil Protection Service has – in cooperation with the country’s regional airlines – booked several ATR-42s for the future transport or repatriation of infected persons in larger numbers. At the time we wrote this article, three aircraft were part of this program:
- an ATR-42-500 operated by Sky Express (reg SX-GRI)
- and both ATR-42-600s operated by Olympic Air (regs SX-OAW and SX-OAX)
The aircraft are appropriately marked on the outside – while we learn that the interior doesn’t differ at all from the standard passenger models. Indeed, all three continue to operate normal inter-island services until actually needed; according to the available information, they had not yet been used for this purpose.
