New Berlin Airport was opened on Saturday, October 31. The construction work on the new airport started in 2006, and was supposed to be finished by the end of October 2011. Exactly 9 years later it was opened by a ceremonial landing of Lufthansa (LH/DLH) and EasyJet (U2/EZY) planes at the same time on two runways.
The new airport is located near Berlin Schoenefeld Airport. It was an airport of former Eastern Berlin. Now both Schoenefeld and Tegel airports will be closed and full migration of all operations to a new airport is planned for Sunday, November 8.
During current winter timetable there aren’t any routes from Berlin to Croatia. When seasonal routes to Croatia start in spring 2021, they will all be operated from the new Berlin Brandenburg – Willy Brandt Airport, with new IATA code BER.
