Montenegrin flag air carrier Montenegro Airlines (YM / MGX) will shut down and cease operations. The decision was made by the Government of Montenegro. They also announced their intention to launch a new carrier in spring next year. The airline was founded in 1994 and started with flight operations 3 years later, with a first Fokker F-28 on Podgorica – Bari route. They used to operate a fleet of 5 Fokker F-100s (in the picture), 3 Embraer ERJ-195s and one smaller Embraer ERJ-190. During the summer months, they also leased larger Boeing 737-500 and Boeing 737-300 over last two years. They flew to numerous destinations in Europe from their hubs in Podgorica and Tivat. Monenegro Airlines never had regular flights to Croatia, although they were under consideration.
The Minister of Capital Investments, Mladen Bojanić, announced at a press conference on the Twitter account of the Government of Montenegro: We can’t make any legal decision in favor of Montenegro Airlines. We plan to establish a new company with share capital from the Government, which should to be operational until the next tourist season.
