Wizz Air exits Abu Dhabi and shifts focus to European markets

Wizz Air Holdings PLC has announced a strategic realignment that includes its withdrawal from operations in Abu Dhabi, reinforcing the carrier’s focus on Central, Eastern, and Western European markets. The decision follows a comprehensive review of market dynamics, operational challenges, and geopolitical developments, particularly in the increasingly complex Middle Eastern environment.

Effective from 1 September 2025, the carrier will suspend all flights operating from its Abu Dhabi base and begin the process of exiting the joint venture with its local partner, ADQ (Abu Dhabi Developmental Holding Company). The focus will shift to markets such as Austria, Italy, and the United Kingdom, where greater long-term potential for sustainable growth and profitability is anticipated. According to the carrier, this decision has been driven by several factors, including engine reliability issues, fuel price volatility, regulatory constraints, and reduced access to key markets—all of which have undermined the viability of maintaining its ultra-low-cost model in the region.

The carrier has stated that all passengers with bookings after 31 August 2025 will be contacted directly via email with refund options or alternative travel arrangements. Passengers who purchased tickets through third-party providers are advised to reach out to their agents. These changes will not affect other flights operated by the Wizz Air Group.

Wizz Air CEO József Váradi thanked staff in Abu Dhabi for their efforts, acknowledging that despite the progress made, circumstances have shifted significantly. “The environment has changed dramatically. This was a difficult decision, but we believe it is the right one given the circumstances. We are focused on initiatives that strengthen Wizz Air’s core proposition and create greater shareholder value,” Váradi said.

The carrier now faces an interesting period ahead, as many of its future strategic decisions—including the order of 47 Airbus A321XLR aircraft—were based on the development of operations from Abu Dhabi. How the fleet and expansion plans will adapt to this new direction remains to be seen.
