Scandinavian airline SAS has announced its largest jet aircraft order since 1996, signing a historic agreement with Brazilian manufacturer Embraer for the delivery of 45 E195-E2 aircraft, with options for an additional 10. The value of the order (excluding options) is estimated at around USD 4 billion. This strategic investment is part of SAS’s long-term fleet renewal plan aimed at increasing efficiency, reducing emissions, and enabling future growth from its global hub in Copenhagen and across Scandinavia and the world.
“This is a pivotal moment for SAS,” said Anko van der Werff, President and CEO of SAS. “The Embraer E195-E2 is a top-tier aircraft that combines excellent performance with outstanding fuel efficiency and comfort. This investment reflects our confidence in the future and the strength of the agreement we have reached.”
The first deliveries are expected at the end of 2027, with deliveries continuing over approximately four years. The E195-E2 aircraft are equipped with the latest Pratt & Whitney PW1900G engines, enabling double-digit reductions in fuel consumption, emissions, and noise compared to previous generations. These aircraft have already been tested with 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), and full certification for regular flights using 100% SAF is a near-term goal. Currently, flights with up to 50% SAF blend are possible.
“The E195-E2 is key to building a modern, efficient fleet with top performance. It allows us to expand our network with lower emissions, better economics, and an excellent passenger experience,” Van der Werff added.
Thanks to its size and range, the E195-E2 perfectly complements SAS’s existing fleet, enabling more frequencies, greater network flexibility, and lower operating costs per flight. These aircraft will play a crucial role in strengthening regional and European connectivity.
President and CEO of Embraer Commercial Aviation, Arjan Meijer, stated: “We are thrilled to deepen our cooperation with SAS through this landmark agreement. The E195-E2 is the quietest jet in its class, 29% more fuel-efficient and with a 62% smaller noise footprint. It truly marks a turning point in efficiency, performance, and passenger comfort.”
This order marks another step in SAS’s strategy to transform into the airline of the future, with a modernized fleet and enhanced travel experience. The aim is to further strengthen international presence and regional connectivity through more efficient and environmentally friendly operations. The deal was concluded with the support of Skyworks Holding. SAS was recently named the most punctual airline in the world*, further underscoring its commitment to operational excellence.
*According to data from Cirium, SAS ranked 1st in on-time performance among 660 airlines in April and May 2025.
