Amidst the familiar roar of Pilatus PC-9M aircraft and the cheers of an enthusiastic crowd, the Croatian Air Force’s aerobatic team – “Wings of Storm” – celebrated its 20th anniversary on Saturday 5 April, at the “Colonel Mirko Vukšić” barracks in Zemunik. High-ranking officials attended the event, including Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Ivan Anušić and Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Tihomir Kundid. However, the true stars of the day were the pilots, who once again demonstrated their incredible skill, proving why they are the pride of the Croatian Air Force.
Unfortunately, due to limited capacity, the event was not open to the general public, leaving many aviation enthusiasts unable to witness this spectacular show. Among those present at the military apron of Zadar Airbase were high school students, members of aviation clubs and associations, and the families of the participants, while many fans of aerial displays could only watch from afar.
Minister Anušić presented the members of the “Wings of Storm” with a formal commendation, which was accepted on behalf of the team by its leader, Major Darko Belančić. “I congratulate all members of the ‘Wings of Storm’ on 20 successful years. Throughout these years, you have demonstrated exceptional knowledge and skill in aviation,” the minister stated, adding that the team uniquely represents Croatia and its Air Force across Europe and the world.
General Kundid praised the pilots for their flawless aerobatics, emphasizing their professionalism and courage. “Today, you have particularly showcased your outstanding flying skills, knowledge, and experience,” Kundid said.
The aerial spectacle began with a parachute jump – three members of the Special Operations Command leaped from an Mi-171 Sh helicopter, carrying the flags of the Republic of Croatia, the Croatian Air Force, and the 93rd Air Force Wing. However, the real excitement came when the “Wings of Storm” took to the skies in formation, performing 19 aerobatic maneuvers during their 21-minute display. The audience watched in awe as the pilots executed every turn, loop, and close-formation flight, culminating in a flyover by the multirole Rafale fighter jet, accompanied by Bell 206B3 and Kiowa Warrior OH-58D helicopters, as well as the Canadair CL-415 and Air Tractor AT-802 firefighting aircraft.
Major Belančić, the team leader, emphasized that performing in Croatia is their greatest joy. “There’s nothing more rewarding than flying for our home crowd and showcasing just how fascinating the pilot’s profession is,” Belančić said, adding that members of the “Wings of Storm” must not only be excellent pilots but also individuals of strong character.
The “Wings of Storm” were first introduced to the public on 5 August 2005, in Knin, during the 10th anniversary commemoration of Operation Storm – from which they derived their name. Since then, they have become a recognizable brand of the Croatian military, performing in 15 countries with 261 official displays, including 68 international appearances.
As the “Wings of Storm” made their final pass and the thunderous sound of their engines faded, one thing became clear – this team is not just a symbol of Croatian aviation but also proof that Croatian pilots rank among the best in the world. And as the skies above Zemunik grew quiet, everyone in attendance was left with just one thought: When is the next show? – hoping that next time, a wider audience will have the chance to witness this unforgettable spectacle.
