Person killed on runway after being struck by Frontier Airlines aircraft

A serious accident occurred on Friday evening, May 8, 2026, at Denver International Airport, where a person who had unlawfully entered the airport’s secured area died during the takeoff roll of a Frontier Airlines aircraft. Although initial reports described the incident as an aircraft striking a person on the runway, available information indicates that the person was killed after being ingested by the aircraft’s engine, rather than as a result of a direct impact with the fuselage or landing gear. The incident occurred at around 23:19 local time on runway 17L, during the takeoff roll of an Airbus A321neo operating flight F9 4345 to Los Angeles. There were 224 passengers and seven crew members on board.

According to available information, the person had climbed over the airport’s perimeter fence several minutes before the accident and entered the area of an active runway. The identity of the deceased person remains unknown, as do the reasons why they entered the airport’s restricted area. US authorities have opened an investigation to determine the circumstances of the security breach, as well as the identity of the person who died.

The crew of the Frontier aircraft spotted the person on the runway during the takeoff roll. According to recordings of communications with air traffic control, the pilots first reported that an unidentified person was on the runway, and then reported that an impact had occurred. After that, an engine fire and smoke in the cabin were reported, prompting the crew to reject the takeoff and bring the aircraft to a stop on the runway. According to Flightradar24 data, the aircraft had reached a speed of 127 knots before the takeoff was rejected.

After the aircraft came to a stop, passengers and crew were evacuated using the emergency slides. Twelve people sustained minor injuries, while five were taken to hospital for evaluation. The engine fire, which occurred after the engine ingested the person on the runway, was quickly extinguished by airport fire crews. None of the passengers or crew members sustained serious injuries.

Videos posted on social media by passengers show the chaotic moments after the aircraft stopped, the evacuation via emergency slides and the response of emergency services. One of the aircraft’s engines sustained significant damage, while smoke in the cabin further increased panic among passengers.

Runway 17L was closed for several hours due to the investigation and the removal of the aftermath of the accident. Denver International Airport later confirmed that the runway had reopened, while the investigation includes local police, the airport, the Federal Aviation Administration, TSA and the NTSB. Frontier Airlines expressed regret over the incident and said it is cooperating with the relevant authorities in the investigation.
