SAS has chosen to continue its journey with the SkyTeam alliance, strengthening its ties with Air France and KLM. As a result, the partnership with Lufthansa has been discontinued. This decision has left Lufthansa without a regional partner in Scandinavia, a market of significant interest to airlines due to the region’s high purchasing power. Lufthansa now faces the challenge of finding an alternative carrier to connect with smaller airports in Scandinavia that it does not serve directly.
In response, Lufthansa has partnered with the Norwegian regional airline Widerøe to fill the gap left by SAS. While this move doesn’t fully address the challenge of enhancing connectivity across the entire Scandinavian region, it does provide Lufthansa with a valuable partner in Norway, enabling improved connections.
Starting 1 September 2024, Lufthansa will place its flight numbers on select Widerøe flights for the following routes:
From Bergen to:
- Kristiansand (KRS)
- Stavanger (SVG)
- Haugesund (HAU)
- Florø (FRO)
- Ålesund (AES)
- Molde (MOL)
- Kristiansund (KSU)
- Trondheim (TRD)
- Bodø (BOO)
- Tromsø (TOS)
- Munich (MUC)
- Brussels (BRU)
From Trondheim to:
- Bodø (BOO)
- Ålesund (AES)
From Tromsø to:
- Bodø (BOO)
- Hammerfest (HFT)
- Alta (ALF)
Lufthansa will place its flight numbers on Widerøe’s flights to Munich and Brussels, enhancing connectivity between Lufthansa’s hubs and key Norwegian cities. This partnership will ensure even better integration of the Scandinavian market with Lufthansa’s network.
Moreover, passengers flying with Swiss, Austrian, and Brussels Airlines will also benefit from this collaboration, as they will be able to seamlessly transfer onto Widerøe’s flights.
