Japan Airlines gives foreign passengers free domestic tickets

Since the middle of September, Japan Airlines (JAL) has enabled its passengers coming from other countries to get free tickets in domestic transport. The goal is to enable travelers to explore Japan even better.

In order to get free domestic tickets, passengers must book an international flight with Japan Airlines to Japan, and then JAL gives them free tickets to their next destination in Japan. For example, you book a ticket from Singapore to Tokyo, stay in Tokyo for a few days and continue your journey with JAL to, for example, Sapporo. You will not pay anything for that part of the journey from Tokyo to Sapporo. In order to have this option, passengers must book tickets on JAL’s website, and that trip must be on one reservation. If you buy a separate ticket for domestic traffic on a new reservation, you will have to pay the full price of the domestic ticket.

Unfortunately, this option is not yet available for travelers from Europe, as well as for travelers from many other countries, but only for travelers from:

  • United States of America
  • Canada
  • Mexico
  • Thailand
  • Singapore
  • Australia
  • New Zealand
  • Vietnam
  • Philippines
  • Indonesia
  • India
  • China
  • Taiwan

For travelers from the United States of America, Canada and Mexico, this service is not completely free, but they have to pay an additional 100 US dollars, while for travelers from China it is 300 yuan, or slightly less than 40 euros. If they continue to another destination in Japan in less than 24 hours, then they do not pay this fee. So if they transfer in Tokyo and continue to Sapporo 2 hours after landing, then they will not pay that fee. All other passengers do not pay a fee even if they stay in the first city for more than 24 hours.
