Airbus has announced that the A220 will soon receive its first Airspace cabin, with Air Canada set to operate the first commercial flights featuring the new interior. The upgraded A220 cabin will include all the benefits of the Airspace concept, including new Airspace XL overhead bins, with aircraft deliveries beginning in early 2026.
The A220 already offers the widest seats, the largest aisles, and largest windows in its class, and the new Airspace design will provide passengers with even more space and comfort. The upgrades include a 20% increase in baggage capacity thanks to the new XL bins, which are 10% lighter and make handling luggage easier for the crew during boarding. Enhanced lighting, accompanied by an optional third LED strip beneath the bins, will create a more modern ambiance. The 15% extra storage space on the A220-300 will accommodate up to 19 additional carry-on bags.
The Airspace cabin for the A220 was first announced in 2023, with factory installation expected by late 2025. Existing aircraft will also be eligible for retrofits in the coming years. Air Canada is the first airline to adopt the new cabin, continuing its strategy of investing in passenger comfort.
“The A220 is already a favorite among our passengers, and now it’s about to get even better. Larger overhead bins mean more space for carry-ons, faster boarding, and an even more enjoyable inflight experience,” said John Moody, Director of Inflight Product at Air Canada. Ingo Wuggetzer, Vice President of Cabin Marketing at Airbus, added: “We’re proud to have Air Canada as the launch customer for this innovation. With the A220 in Airspace configuration, we can now offer a consistent passenger experience across all our aircraft—from widebody models to single-aisle jets.”
Beyond passenger comfort, the new cabin also brings operational benefits. The simplified bin closure system will speed up boarding, while a weight reduction of 300 lbs (136 kg) will improve fuel efficiency and operational performance.
Following a recent additional order, Air Canada now has a total of 65 A220-300s on order, with the first aircraft featuring XL bins expected to be delivered in early 2026. By the end of that year, the new configuration will become standard. Additionally, the A220 Airspace cabin has been nominated for the prestigious Crystal Cabin Award in the Passenger Comfort category.
