New generation aircraft with a new type of engines can make longer flights compared to the previous generation of aircraft. Thus, we see that the 737 MAX and A320neo families of aircraft are increasingly present on long-haul flights, the A321XLR will be able to fly up to 4,700 NM, and the A220 already regularly performs flights of 5+ hours.
However, Embraer aircraft from the E-jet family have so far been mostly reserved for short-haul, i.e. regional flights, so it is interesting to see that Royal Jordanian is planning 5-hour flights on the newest addition to its fleet – the Embraer E195-E2.
It is a flight between Amman (AMM) and Madrid (MAD). The great circle distance between these two cities is 3,659 km, which depending on weather conditions can result in a flight time of 4.5 to 5 hours. In the Royal Jordanian booking system, the flight time is 05:40.
Royal Jordanian plans to start operations with Embraer E195-E2 aircraft in the first quarter of 2024, with the first flight tentatively scheduled for January 8, 2024. The Amman – Tel Aviv route (flight RJ342) has been selected for the inaugural flight, followed by the introduction of routes from Amman to Cairo (RJ501), Aqaba (RJ306) and Riyadh (RJ730).
