Croatia Airlines’ second A220 will arrive at the end of the year

Croatia Airlines has announced that the second Airbus A220 will join its fleet in December. Although it is known that this A220-300 will be named after the city of Split, the registration number remains undisclosed.

The first A220 in the fleet has the registration number 9A-CAE. The prefix ‘9A’ designates Croatia as the country of registry, while the remaining three letters are selected by the airline, following specific guidelines. At Croatia Airlines, the first two letters indicate the fleet (e.g., 9A-CT… for the Airbus fleet and 9A-CQ… for the DHC 8-400 fleet), and the third letter is assigned alphabetically based on the aircraft’s arrival.

Based on the airline’s naming conventions, the next aircraft would logically be registered as 9A-CAF. However, this number is already taken by a Champion Citabria 7 GCBC, owned by the Rijeka sailing club “Krila Kvarnera” and registered with the Croatian Civil Aviation Agency.

Croatia Airlines expects to receive six more aircraft in 2025, four in 2026, and the final three in 2027. As the new aircraft gradually enter service, the existing Airbus A320, A319, and DHC 8-400 models will be phased out. The airline also confirmed to AvioRadar that once the fleet renewal is complete, they will seek a partner to lease turboprop aircraft under a wet lease arrangement. These aircraft will be used for shorter flights not intended for the A220.
