Bermuda-based airline BermudAir is expanding into cargo operations with the addition of one Embraer E190F, which it will lease from Regional One. This makes it the second operator of Embraer’s E-Freighter worldwide and the first in the Americas, Embraer and Regional One announced on 16 September.

BermudAir plans to use the freighter to build on its existing network connecting Bermuda, the Caribbean and North America. Operations will focus on express shipments, e-commerce and time-sensitive cargo, while supporting local businesses on the islands served by the airline.

BermudAir founder and CEO Adam Scott described cargo as a natural next step in the company’s development. He said the E190F would allow the airline to draw on its established network and operational experience to develop a new line of business.

BermudAir launched operations in 2023 and, according to the announcement, currently serves ten destinations across the Caribbean, the United States and Canada. Its passenger fleet consists of two Embraer E175s and two E190s, making the addition of the freighter a continuation of its reliance on the E-Jet family.

The E190F is converted from a passenger aircraft under the E190 passenger-to-freighter (P2F) programme. Its main and lower decks provide more than 100 cubic metres of cargo space and a payload capacity of up to 13.5 tonnes. Embraer developed the aircraft to serve the market segment between cargo turboprops and larger narrowbody jets, particularly on routes where flight frequency and fast delivery are important.

According to the manufacturer, the E-Freighter offers up to 30 per cent lower operating costs than conventional narrowbody freighters, with similar cargo volume and range. Compared with large cargo turboprops, Embraer cites 35 per cent more cargo volume and more than three times the range.

Regional One has placed five firm orders for the E190F since the programme was launched. Two converted aircraft have already been delivered and entered service. The leasing company sees BermudAir’s addition to the operator base as an important step towards expanding the programme into new markets.

Embraer Commercial Aviation President and CEO Arjan Meijer said BermudAir’s selection marked a new chapter for the programme in North America and the Caribbean. The announcement did not specify the exact launch date for cargo operations or the E190F’s initial routes.
