Avolon, an aircraft finance and leasing company, has placed a firm order for 35 Airbus A330-900s and 75 A320neo Family aircraft. The agreement, announced on 9 October, brings Avolon’s total orders for the A330-900 to 114, while its cumulative orders for the A320 Family have reached approximately 650 aircraft.
The order further strengthens Avolon’s position as the largest A330-900 customer among aircraft lessors. The announcement did not disclose the contract value, delivery schedule or breakdown of the 75 narrowbody aircraft by A320neo Family variant.
Avolon CEO Andy Cronin said demand for new aircraft remains strong and that the agreement will enable the company to support its customers’ fleet expansion and replacement requirements well into the next decade. He expects long-term growth in air travel to sustain demand for both the widebody A330neo and the narrowbody A320neo Family.
Airbus Executive Vice President of Sales for Commercial Aircraft Benoît de Saint-Exupéry said Avolon’s repeat orders demonstrate the leasing community’s interest in both programmes. He attributed their appeal to their broad range of applications, from domestic and regional services to long-haul routes, enabling lessors to offer aircraft to airlines with different business models.
The A330neo is powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines, with Airbus quoting a range of up to 8,100 nautical miles, or approximately 15,000 kilometres. According to the manufacturer, fuel consumption, CO₂ emissions and operating costs are up to 25 per cent lower than those of previous-generation competing aircraft. The passenger cabin features Airbus’s Airspace design.
The A320 Family has secured more than 20,400 orders worldwide. According to Airbus, the neo generation, which includes the largest variant, the A321neo, delivers at least a 20 per cent reduction in fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions compared with previous-generation single-aisle aircraft.
