Volotea has two Airbus A320 aircraft based in Athens (EC-NTM and EC-ISI), each with a capacity of 180 seats. In addition to these two planes, aircraft from other Volotea bases, such as Bordeaux and Nantes, also arrive in Athens. On 10 July 2024, six other planes arrived from various bases.
- EC-NPC, Airbus A320, Strasbourg base
- EC-NON, Airbus A320, Bordeaux base
- EC-NHP, Airbus A319, Nantes base
- EC-NNZ, Airbus A320, Bari base
- EC-MUX, Airbus A319, Marseille base
- EC-MTC, Airbus A319, Cagliari base
On July 10, 2024 (Wednesday), an analysis of flights for Volotea’s base in Athens was conducted using data from flightradar24.com.
Volotea employs an intriguing strategy where planes from other bases operate flights from various cities to Athens, facilitating better connections without the need to base additional aircraft in Athens. For example, a plane from Strasbourg flies to Split, then to Athens instead of returning directly to Strasbourg, and back to Split before finally returning to its base in Strasbourg. Similarly, a plane based in Bordeaux flies to Dubrovnik, then to Athens and back to Dubrovnik before returning to Bordeaux. This strategy allows Volotea to increase the number of routes to and from Split and Dubrovnik without needing to station aircraft at these airports.
The average flight time of an individual aircraft
Volotea’s planes in Athens on 10 July 2024, had varying average flight times. The longest average flight time was over 2 hours, while the shortest was only 51 minutes. The aircraft EC-NON had the highest average because 4 out of its 6 flights lasted more than 2 hours, with the remaining 2 flights lasting just over an hour. Conversely, aircraft EC-ISI had the lowest average flight time. Despite flying 10 flights that day, 6 of them lasted about half an hour, while the other 4 lasted around 1.5 hours.
Total flight time for each aircraft
On 10 July 2024, each Volotea aircraft at the Athens base flew an average of around 11 hours. EC-NON flew the most due to its long flights, while EC-ISI flew the least because of its short flights from Athens to the Greek islands. Another aircraft based in Athens, EC-NTM, flew significantly more than EC-ISI due to its longer flights, with an average flight duration of 1 hour and 35 minutes.
Number of flights per aircraft
Most Volotea aircraft flew 8 flights during the day on July 10, 2024. Only one aircraft flew 10 flights, while two planes flew 6 flights each. The plane with the most flights, which frequently connects Athens with the Greek islands, can be referred to as the “Island Hopper.”
