Airbus’ U030 Flexrotor unmanned aircraft system is simultaneously expanding its presence in the European and North American markets. The system has begun its first operational missions for the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) over the Baltic Sea, while Voyageur Aviation has become its first Canadian customer.
Airbus Helicopters and Voyageur Aviation signed an agreement at the Farnborough International Airshow covering the first Canadian order for the U030 Flexrotor system. Voyageur will become the platform’s launch customer in Canada, with the agreement building on a memorandum of understanding signed by the two companies in May 2026 during the CANSEC exhibition to support Canadian defence requirements.
Voyageur plans to incorporate the Flexrotor into its intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance service offering. The company believes its experience in flight operations, maintenance, training and technical support will enable the rapid introduction of the new system, including operations in demanding Canadian land and maritime environments.
The U030 Flexrotor is a tactical unmanned aircraft system with vertical take-off and landing capabilities, designed for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and target-acquisition missions. It has a maximum take-off weight of 25 kilograms and can remain airborne for more than 12 hours in its standard configuration.
For fully autonomous take-off and landing, either from land or a vessel, the system requires an area measuring approximately 3.7 by 3.7 metres.
These characteristics allow the Flexrotor to operate from very confined spaces without the need for a runway or extensive infrastructure. Depending on the installed equipment, it can carry out military and security missions, as well as monitor wildfires, infrastructure, icy regions and maritime traffic.
At the same time as announcing the first Canadian order, Airbus confirmed that the U030 Flexrotor had begun operational missions in Europe. The system was deployed during July in Estonia, Latvia and Finland, where it is conducting maritime surveillance over the Baltic Sea for EMSA.
This marks its first operational deployment in Europe as part of EMSA’s remotely piloted aircraft surveillance services.
Airbus Helicopters was awarded a €30 million framework contract in December 2025 to provide remotely piloted aircraft system services for maritime surveillance in European Union member states.
The operations are being carried out in cooperation with subcontractor Extensee, which operates the aircraft, while Airbus coordinates deployments and missions in participating countries. A series of test flights was completed before the start of operations to confirm compliance with technical and regulatory requirements.
For European maritime missions, the Flexrotor is equipped with electro-optical and infrared sensors, as well as radar. The collected data are transmitted in real time to EMSA’s data centre, allowing national authorities to monitor flights and immediately use the information in their operational activities.
The system can support search-and-rescue missions, fisheries control, pollution monitoring and the detection of smuggling and other illegal activities at sea.
The near-simultaneous entry into operational service in Europe and conclusion of the first Canadian agreement demonstrate Airbus’ intention to position the Flexrotor as a multi-role platform for military, government and civilian users.
Its long endurance, ability to operate from very limited areas and real-time data transmission make it particularly suitable for monitoring large and difficult-to-access land and maritime regions.
