Kazakhstan’s national carrier Air Astana has finalized an order for up to 15 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, marking the largest single purchase in the airline’s history and opening a new chapter in its long-haul development strategy. The agreement with Boeing confirms the carrier’s strategic focus on fleet modernization and the expansion of its intercontinental network.
The order, previously announced as a commitment in November 2025, has now been formalized and includes additional 787-9 aircraft. In addition, three more aircraft of the same type will be delivered through lessors, bringing Air Astana’s total Dreamliner fleet to as many as 18 aircraft in the coming years. This will significantly increase the airline’s long-haul capacity to destinations across Asia, Europe and potentially North America.
The company emphasizes that the new Dreamliners will enable further operational growth while also enhancing the passenger experience. The 787 family is known for its reduced fuel consumption, extended range and advanced cabin features, including higher humidity levels, larger windows and lower cabin noise. Such characteristics are increasingly crucial in today’s competitive long-haul market.
For Boeing, one of the world’s leading commercial aircraft manufacturers and a major U.S. exporter, the order further strengthens its presence in Central Asia. The partnership with Air Astana has been ongoing for years, and the expansion of the Dreamliner fleet underlines long-term confidence in the performance and economics of the 787-9.
Given Kazakhstan’s strategic geographic position between Europe and Asia, the expansion of the widebody fleet creates opportunities to reinforce the country’s transit role and deepen its integration into global air traffic flows. With this investment, Air Astana clearly signals its ambition to become an even more prominent player on the intercontinental stage, relying on a technologically advanced and operationally efficient Dreamliner fleet.
