Japanese carrier Japan Airlines (JAL) has announced its decision to acquire Embraer E190-E2 aircraft to gradually replace its existing fleet of Embraer E170 and E190 regional jets. The order includes 16 firm aircraft and options for an additional ten, with deliveries expected to begin in fiscal year 2029.

The new aircraft will be operated by J-AIR, a regional subsidiary of the JAL Group, which maintains an extensive domestic network across Japan from its primary hub at Osaka International Airport (Itami). J-AIR plays an important role in connecting smaller cities and regional centers with major transportation hubs, serving destinations ranging from Hokkaido in the north to the Amami Islands in southern Japan.

The fleet renewal decision comes as Japan’s domestic aviation market faces several structural challenges. Declining demand for business travel, long-term population decline, and rising operating costs, further intensified by inflation and unfavorable currency fluctuations, are putting pressure on the economic sustainability of domestic routes. In response, JAL is restructuring its operations under its long-term strategy, JAL Group Management Vision 2035, with the aim of preserving air connectivity for regional communities.

By selecting the E190-E2, JAL aims to achieve a balance between available capacity, operating costs, and anticipated passenger demand. The aircraft belongs to the second generation of Embraer’s E-Jet family and is equipped with Pratt & Whitney PW1900G engines and aerodynamically improved wings. Compared with previous-generation regional aircraft, it offers lower fuel consumption, reduced carbon dioxide emissions, and significantly lower noise levels, particularly important for operations at airports located in densely populated areas.

The Embraer E190-E2 measures 36.3 meters in length, with a wingspan of 33.7 meters and a height of 10.7 meters. Depending on the cabin configuration, it can accommodate between 97 and 114 passengers, while its maximum advertised range reaches 5,463 kilometers. JAL has not yet announced the cabin configuration that J-AIR will adopt.

Mitsuko Tottori, President and Group CEO of the JAL Group, emphasized that introducing the new aircraft represents an important step toward maintaining a sustainable domestic network in the long term. She highlighted that air transportation in Japan is not merely a commercial activity but also an essential part of the country’s social infrastructure, supporting local economies and the everyday lives of residents.

For Brazilian manufacturer Embraer, the order represents another significant success for the E2 program in the Asian market, while for J-AIR, it marks the beginning of a new phase in the modernization of its regional fleet. With the introduction of the E190-E2, JAL intends to maintain its extensive domestic network while adapting capacity to changing demand and improving the economic efficiency of its operations.
