Heart Aerospace completes first flight of X1 electric demonstrator

Heart Aerospace has successfully completed the first flight of its X1 demonstrator aircraft, which the company describes as the largest battery-electric aircraft ever flown. The flight took place on Wednesday, August 12, from Heart Aerospace’s flight-test base at Plattsburgh International Airport in New York State.

According to a press release issued by Heart Aerospace, the X1 has a wingspan of 106 feet (32.31 metres) and a length of 76 feet (23.16 metres), while its takeoff weight exceeded 25,000 pounds, or 11.3 tonnes. The first flight lasted 27 minutes, during which the aircraft reached an altitude of 1,100 feet above ground level, or 335 metres, while its fully electric propulsion system delivered more than one megawatt of power.

The flight was conducted under an FAA Special Airworthiness Certificate in the Experimental Category. The test profile included taxiing, takeoff, climb, manoeuvring and landing, with the objective of demonstrating fully electric flight at a scale relevant to future commercial aircraft.

One particularly notable aspect of the flight was its energy cost. The X1 was powered exclusively by batteries during its maiden flight and, according to Heart Aerospace, consumed approximately five US dollars’ worth of electricity during the entire mission. The company highlighted the figure amid a sharp increase in jet fuel prices: the average price of jet fuel during the week ending August 7 stood at $3.50 per gallon, representing an increase of 63 percent year-on-year. Heart sees this as one of the key advantages of electric propulsion – significantly lower and more stable energy costs, as well as reduced exposure of airlines to fluctuations in global oil prices.

“With the first flight of X1, we have demonstrated electric flight at the scale of a commercial airliner. Electric commercial aircraft have the potential to fundamentally reshape airline economics and ultimately lower the cost of air travel for passengers,” said Anders Forslund, Founder and CEO of Heart Aerospace.

The X1 is a full-scale demonstrator that serves as a technological foundation for the development of the future ES-30 regional aircraft. Its purpose is to validate key technologies, aerodynamics and flight performance, as well as the company’s own ability to design, manufacture, test and operate a new-generation aircraft.

The ES-30 is being developed as a conventional fixed-wing, 30-seat hybrid-electric regional airliner, which Heart intends to certify under FAA Part 25 requirements. Airlines that have already expressed interest and made commitments to the programme include United Airlines, Air Canada and JSX.

Heart Aerospace expects the ES-30 to enter commercial service in 2031. According to the manufacturer’s estimates, its operating costs should be more than 40 percent lower than those of legacy regional aircraft. The savings are expected to come from lower energy costs, reduced maintenance requirements associated with a simplified electric propulsion system, and greater aircraft reliability and availability.

The company expects this cost advantage to widen further over time as battery technology develops, operational efficiency improves and the aircraft benefits from lower exposure to future emissions-related taxes and charges in aviation.

Alongside the X1 programme, Heart Aerospace is developing the first pre-production ES-30 at its pilot manufacturing facility in Los Angeles. Flight testing is scheduled to begin in 2028, while entry into commercial service is planned for 2031.
