In its latest 2026 annual Outlook, lessor Avolon openly signals that 2027 could bring the launch of new commercial aircraft programs, with the A220-500, A350-2000 and Boeing 777-10X cited as the most likely candidates. According to Avolon, while 2026 is too early for official announcements, as soon as next year, the industry could enter a new phase of development.
The lessor notes that the A220-500 emerges as a logical extension of the existing A220 family, offering greater capacity and range that would allow the type to enter a segment currently dominated by larger single-aisle aircraft. Such a variant could address airlines’ growing demand for more efficient mid-capacity aircraft, particularly in markets with constrained slots and rising operating costs.
In the widebody segment, Avolon points to the development of the A350-2000 as a realistic scenario—a larger and more powerful member of the A350 family that would compete directly with Boeing’s 777X. In the lessor’s assessment, such an aircraft could fill the gap between existing variants and provide airlines with a solution for high-density long-haul routes, while delivering significantly better economics than older generations of large widebody aircraft.
On the Boeing side, Avolon highlights the 777-10X as a potential response to market demand for even greater capacity and efficiency in the very-large passenger aircraft segment, as well as an alternative to the Airbus A380. The lessor emphasizes that such a variant could further strengthen the 777X family and enable airlines to replace part of their very large aircraft fleets with lower operating costs.
According to Avolon, the common denominator across all three projects is that the industry is entering a period in which existing platforms are reaching the limits of further improvement, while market pressures, fleet aging and the need for greater efficiency are becoming increasingly pronounced. Although these aircraft would only realistically enter service in the second half of the next decade, the lessor believes that 2027 could be the year when manufacturers formally launch new programs, marking the beginning of the next major cycle in the development of commercial aviation.
