Romania’s national carrier TAROM has taken delivery of its first Boeing 737-8, marking the introduction of the 737 MAX family into its fleet. The delivery was celebrated in Bucharest on September 12, 2026, and, according to Boeing’s announcement, it is also the first aircraft of this type in Romania.

The aircraft is the first of two that TAROM is leasing from CDB Aviation. Their introduction forms part of the renewal of the airline’s single-aisle fleet, which currently includes four Boeing 737 Next-Generation aircraft. The carrier plans to deploy the new aircraft on routes connecting Bucharest with major European capitals.

Fleet renewal is an integral part of TAROM’s restructuring plan, through which the airline aims to improve operational efficiency and lay the foundations for long-term growth. Boeing states that the 737 MAX reduces fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions by up to 20% compared with the aircraft it replaces.

“The addition of the first Boeing 737 MAX aircraft to the TAROM fleet is a pivotal moment in the company’s transformation process. Fleet renewal and efficient operational capacity are essential components of our restructuring plan,” said TAROM CEO Cristian Anghel. He added that introducing the new aircraft type would enhance the passenger experience and support the airline’s commitment to maintaining a modern fleet connecting Romania with the world.

TAROM’s first 737 MAX bears the name of Mircea Lucescu. Anghel highlighted the symbolic significance of the choice, associating it with performance, discipline and trust, values the airline wants to define this new chapter in its operations.

Gavan Daly, CDB Aviation’s Head of Commercial for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, said the delivery demonstrated the lessor’s support for TAROM’s modernization. Boeing’s Sales Director for Eurasia and India, Mario Antonio Ebcim, emphasized that the introduction of the 737 MAX reflected the Romanian carrier’s confidence in the 737 family and the continuation of their partnership.

Founded in 1954, TAROM operates under the authority of Romania’s Ministry of Transportation. According to the announcement, the airline has a fleet of ten aircraft and serves more than 50 destinations through its own flights and codeshare partners. It has been a member of the SkyTeam alliance since 2010.
